Tim joined the company in 2002, attracted by his passion for oak timber framed buildings and the opportunity to lead the company in its desire to push the boundaries of oak timber framing. Tim brings outstanding management experience to the team. He is a chartered management accountant, has a degree in business studies and also gained a master’s in business administration. Tim has extensive experience of managing companies of all sizes, in many business sectors, including construction and building. Tim’s no-nonsense hands-on approach and commercial acumen, and perhaps most importantly his passion for excellence, make him the ideal complement to the craft-based skills of the rest of the team.
Andy joined Carpenter Oak & Woodland in 2005, to help the company provide a greater focus on customer service, marketing and sales. Andy’s background is varied indeed – helping him to bring a wide range of skills to the team. Much of his working life has been spent in consultancy and management roles, where (as a skilled management coach) he has helped organisations to grow and better meet the needs of their customers. An avid lover of oak carpentry, Andy has also spent time in oak furniture restoration and conservation – something he still enjoys as a hobby.
Scott had many years experience in the construction industry both as a Quantity Surveyor and Contracts Manager before moving on to manage a number of construction related businesses. In 2004 he joined Carpenter Oak & Woodland primarily because of his love of working with wood. From 2004 to 2006 he managed our Scottish timber framing yard and then moved south to Wiltshire in June 2006 where he took on the role of Southern Area Yard Manager. However most recently Scott has taken on responsibility for our Timber Engineering Division.
Charley founded Carpenter Oak & Woodland in 1987. A leading figure in the UK timber-framing industry, Charley is a member of the Timber Framers’ Guild, Carpenters’ Fellowship, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) and is a past member of the British Woodworking Federation’s British Standards Committee. Charley balances creativity with a deep understanding of timber framing – and strives for extremely high standards of design, craftsmanship and customer service.
Before joining Carpenter Oak & Woodland Pete worked in a number of architectural practices both large and small. In addition he has involved himself in several construction projects to understand the hands on practicalities of the industry. Looking for a new challenge and with a particular interest in the use of timber in construction he joined us as a frame designer in 2005. Since then Pete has avidly developed his timber framing knowledge. This combined with his architectural expertise makes him ideally placed to help our customers bring their projects to fruition. A grounded and pragmatic designer Pete claims to be at his most creative when playing his mandolin and sampling the local ale!
Having successfully run his own cabinet making and furniture restoration business in Highgate, London, Piers moved to the west country in 1997. Having specialised in arts and crafts furniture he was inspired by the work of Sydney Barnsley in the timber framed library at Bedales College in Hampshire. This led him into a career as a timber framer and subsequently as a senior framer. During this period he studied for his HNC and then masters in the conservation of historic buildings at Bath University. As a designer at Carpenter Oak & Woodland Piers is responsible for working with clients, architects and engineers to help bring their projects to fruition. He is a member of CIAT and IHBC.
After 12 years with John Carr Joinery and then Toyota focusing on quality control and problem solving Mark was ready for a move. He says “I was ready for a change of lifestyle and being a lover of the great outdoors Scotland was an obvious choice”. Initially Mark took a job for an outdoor pursuits charity and was responsible for facilities maintenance and a range of projects such as the design and construction of a 175m2 indoor climbing wall. However his life long passion for timber and craftsmanship led him to join us as a frame designer in our Scottish framing yard where he now works alongside Pete Cummins.
Paul started his working life as a carpenter for a local building company and has always enjoyed construction and seeing a concept develop into a reality. His ability to relate to people and understand their needs quickly led him into a sales and estimating role where he enjoyed success with a number of companies. Always eager to develop Paul has completed a number of courses in customer relations and is currently working for a qualification to further enhance his consultative skills. Working closely with his colleagues in our design and production departments Paul deals with the majority of the new enquiries in our Chippenham yard and prides himself on responding quickly to customer needs.
Intriguingly James started working life as an interpreter for deaf people particularly in court and medical cases. However most of his career has been in the construction industry as a project manager. Like so many of the self driven people at Carpenter Oak & Woodland James started his own business with an architect partner taking on design and build projects. However after five years he decided that he’d had enough of general construction and having come into contact with timber framing through a project he was managing he contacted Carpenter Oak & Woodland. James is now Divisional Manager in our Chippenham framing yard.
Chris is one of our many time served craftsman with a huge amount of experience to draw on in his current role. He started his life with timber in 1979 when he entered a 4 year apprenticeship in carpentry, joinery and machining. Following a period with a local joinery company Chris joined us in 1994 as a timber framer. He quickly rose through the ranks to assistant team leader and by 1998 was leading a team of his own. In 2005 he moved into his current role as project manager where he has responsibility for managing the logistics for all of the projects in our Wiltshire framing yard from ordering hundreds of tons of timber through fabrication in our yard to erection on site and subsequent customer care. Chris says he particularly enjoys the daily interaction with clients, architects and engineers and of course with the team leaders with whom he works very closely.
As you’d expect, all of our carpenters and timber engineers are highly experienced. This experience goes beyond new builds to conservation and restoration work – which gives them a valuable perspective into how timber frames perform over hundreds of years. This well-rounded skill set is augmented by our own ongoing training programme, which leads the timber-framing industry.
