Our main office, in England, was opened in 1987, and provides an excellent location for us to support our customers around the UK.
Although working primarily in green oak, we also undertake many projects using other traditional English timbers – including Douglas fir, chestnut and larch – giving us extensive experience in a range of materials. The choice of material is based on practicality, aesthetics and a desire to build in the local style.
From our office near Chippenham in Wiltshire, we deliver projects to all corners of England and Wales – and also support our Scottish office where required.
Each county has its own building vernacular, something which we are sympathetic to when working on an oak timber-framed building project which needs to express its regional roots. We’re also adept at working with modern, contemporary designs, which may fuse a mixture of styles and include modern materials.
Our work on Brock House in Berkshire was featured on television
Carpenter Oak & Woodland has been responsible for some of the UK’s most notable green oak timber-framing projects – and we have received extensive television and press coverage for our work. We undertook the award-winning restoration work at Windsor Castle after the fire of 1992, the award-winning restoration work at The Commandery at Ansty and are part of an international team working on the restoration of Shackleton’s huts in Antarctica. Notable new timber-frame buildings include the award-winning Orchard House in Wiltshire, Brock House in Berkshire (featured on television) and Kelly Martha’s Vineyard in the USA. We’ve won awards for our timber engineering work, most notably for the solar canopy at the Earth Centre in Doncaster and the Olivier Theatre at Bedales School in Hampshire. We’ve also been involved in some very unusual projects, such as building Leonardo’s Crossbow and building the world’s largest trebuchet (a mediaeval siege machine) for Warwick Castle (both of which were featured on television).
