Continual professional development programmes for architects and engineers

Developing the way that architects and engineers understand both the role and potential of timber framing in today’s building design and construction

Carpenter Oak & Woodland provides a series of free continual professional development (CPD) programmes, specifically designed for architects, engineers and construction professionals.

Our CPD programmes are designed to provide architects and engineers with a far greater insight into the use of timber frames within modern building designs. We offer two CPD programmes: one a half-day programme delivered either at one of our timber yards or a location in the UK, and a one-hour CPD, which is typically delivered at the offices of an architectural or engineering practice.

Continual professional development programmes for architects and engineers

The half-day CPD covers:

  • efficient layouts – grids and matrixes.
  • designing for green timber construction – accommodating shrinkage and movement.
  • typical spans and timber sizes – what can be achieved in green timber construction.
  • typical interface detailing – what works and why.
  • the effective and efficient build-up for timber frames.

The one-hour session covers:

  • the reasons for building in timber.
  • shrinkage and movement.
  • the material.
  • interface detailing.
  • working with the idiosyncrasies of green timber.
  • the design, fabrication and erection processes.

Our presenters’ informal yet well-structured style provides an ideal forum for discussion and debate and attendees are encouraged to raise questions and issues relating to their own projects. Attendees will get access to indicative interface detailing on the Carpenter Oak & Woodland website.

When the session is provided at Carpenter Oak & Woodland’s own framing yards, delegates can see first-hand how frames are manufactured, giving the opportunity to speak on a one-on-one basis to experienced framers about the manufacturing and erection processes.
