It was a pleasure to be invited to attend Buro Happold’s internal seminar recently at the fantastic Saville Garden gridshell at Windsor. (We’ve built quite a few gridshells, but none this big!).
One of the main themes of the day was how the various parties in complex timber engineered structures could cooperate in delivering value. It struck me during the day that despite structures of similar complexity being relatively common on the continent, in this country it was still seen as being a fledgling industry. We have bodies defining the concrete industry, steel, aluminium and glazing sectors, but not yet really anything for timber.
We’ve come to realise that a number of our architect and engineer friends who love building in timber have responded to this problem by establishing their own in-house experts as Buro Happold have done, and we were pleased to offer our input to these groups.
What was particularly refreshing though, was to be able to discuss the benefits of collaboration rather than our construction industry’s usual fragmented approach. It was good to hear so many express the view that by involving the experts in the design process early on, not only is the process smoother and problems fewer, but also the best price was
