Project background

Bursledon windmill was originally built in 1813 as a replacement for an earlier post mill – this one is a 5 storey brick tower mill. It ceased working in 1882 when major repairs were needed but they were uneconomical, and at this point the cap and the sails were removed and replaced by a flat roof to provide a viewing platform over the Solent. It was this roof that protected the internal machinery which formed the basis of the restoration project by the Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust between 1976 and 1991. Carpenter Oak & Woodland were involved in the initial restoration, winning a Civic Trust Award for our work, and have continued to provide ongoing repairs and replacements to this day.
