During January and February we’ve had two teams in our Chippenham framing yard fabricating the roof structure for the club house for the Ryder Cup to be held at the Celtic Manor Hotel in 2010. The roof comprises 11 trusses and associated purlins made from Douglas fir and spanning 9.4m. Working with the project engineers the key challenge was to design a structure that integrated successfully with the remainder of the steel and masonry building.

The natural shrinkage of large section timber has to be accommodated in the design and particularly at connection points to rigid structures. The design was based on an existing club house also owned by Sir Terry Matthews in Canada. The client was clear that he wanted minimal visible bracing so other elements of the structure had to provide the permanent stability for the roof. This will be achieved using a structural ply skin to be fitted after erection of the frame. The frame has now gone to site and will be under erection during the first two weeks of March.
