Single storey oak framed house, Wiltshire

Having spent years in temporary accommodation and tending the animals on their organically farmed small holding these clients decided it was time for something more permanent and in keeping with the surrounding countryside.

Making a living from a small organic farm in today’s economic climate takes a great deal of commitment. Being close to their animals twenty four hours a day is essential to their wellbeing and so our clients had been living in temporary accommodation until the time came to build something more appropriate.

Despite having spoken to several architects and seeing some proposed schemes they remained uninspired and so approached us to see if we could help. It quickly became clear that we had an enlightened client who, whilst wanting an oak frame also wanted a real sense of openness to the landscape around them. Working closely with local architects Batterham Matthews Design we developed a scheme for a single storey oak framed house with a simple queen post construction and a significant area of frame mounted glazing to the south and east elevations.

The frame has now been fabricated in our Wiltshire framing yard and is awaiting completion of the ground works on site so that the erection can take place.
