Timber Framing December 1994

590 years ago English oaks were felled, hewn, cut and raised to form an eight bay aisled barn at Charlton Court in West Sussex, in 1994 it was well overdue for some tender loving care!

How our work is featured

Charlton Court Barn in Steyning, West Sussex, is an eight bay, king post construction barn built in the early fourteen hundreds. The conservation of the frame was carried out both on site and in our timber framing yard in Wiltshire. The four page article includes diagrams and black and white photographs of the restoration of the building and the work to the frame. It describes in some detail the approach taken to the repairs and some of the considerations when conserving and restoring timber frames.
