Timber Framing March 1998

Stirling Castle is arguably the most historically significant castle in Scotland and restoring the roof of the Great Oak Hall could not be undertaken lightly

How our work is featured

In the late 18th Century Stirling castle lost its fabulous 16th century hammer beam roof and in 1997 Carpenter Oak & Woodland were contracted to manufacture and install its replacement. It is believed that the west wall may well have been loaded with the original roof before the lime mortar had completely cured. Consequently the wall curves along its length by up to a foot in places creating a shallow S shape. This meant that each hammer beam truss had a slightly different span and pitch, mixing up the pieces was not going to be helpful! This five page article includes large black and white photographs of the reconstruction, diagrammatic details of specific joints and a comprehensive explanation of the process.
