Stirling Castle The Restoration of the Great Hall

The aim of this book is to present the history of the Great Hall and to describe the work of restoration. While Historic Scotland still adheres to the long-held attitude to ruins in the care of the state, this is ‘conserve as found’, it has always accepted that Stirling Castle is a special case.

How our work is featured

A major part of the restoration of the Great Hall at Stirling Castle was the reinstatement of the hammer beam roof.  This book describes how the Conservation and Restoration Division of Carpenter Oak & Woodland was awarded the contract after competitive tender.  The traditional method of setting out, plumbing and scribing is described along with the added complications because the West wall was so far out of alignment.  This meant that every truss was different and had to be set out individually to match the curve of the wall head and the angle of every joint slightly altered as the pitch changed to meet the wall head.  The front cover of the book carries a full page colour photograph of the hammer beam roof.
