Timber Building Spring 2008

Timber Building is a quarterly publication with articles on wood in construction and the built environment. It covers many aspects from preserving our heritage buildings against fire, different types of timber species, updates on timber news from around the world and the use of modern structures with traditional methods.

How our work is featured

In the Spring 2008 issue Timber Building there is an article on “Mitred Oak” by Stephen Powney featuring a traditional oak frame structure with a modern twist which has given Wells Cathedral much needed space.

The Cathedral Development Project was embarked 12 years ago to try to solve the task of the toll taken on the medieval structure by 450,000 tourists a year, meeting the needs of its functions and activities which can compromise the use of space.

Plans were drawn up by architects Purcell Miller Tritton to open and widen areas within the cathedral with oak frame structures. Carpenter Oak and Woodland built the arched brace trusses which were specified, a method they often use and although it is more labour intensive than common framing it gives an uninterrupted and aesthetic view to the ceiling.

The Wells project reinforces the reputation of Carpenter Oak and Woodland in church architecture, following previous work at St Dominic’s Priory and St Mary’s Church, Isle of Skye both featuring oak arched brace trusses.
