Timber Building – Winter 2008

Delivering a substantial new building with the right creative environment within a finite budget isn’t a day to day occurrence for a school bursar. However Paul Bowen at Sandroyd School in Dorset rose to the occasion.

How our work is featured

When the staff at Sandroyd School near Shaftsbury decided it was time to build a new performing arts centre they had never envisaged that it would be such an impressive building. The school puts great store on the quality of its surroundings and the performing arts centre was to be no exception. Against the perception that conventional construction methods are the most economical the client and architect explored the possibility of building in post and beam timber frame.

The article describes how the project developed and why on completion it cost little more than the steel framed alternative. This is a well illustrated article with informative technical information about the design, manufacturing and procurement methodologies.

A very useful read if you’re considering a commercial project that needs to break away from the norm and have an element of wow!
