Homebuilding & Renovating April 2009

In the April 2009 issue of Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine there is an article of a contemporary oak timber frame designed and constructed by Carpenter Oak and Woodland combined with modern bricks and tiles to create a striking new house in Hertfordshire. This property combines cutting-edge technology with local crafts and traditional skills and materials.

How our work is featured

Carpenter Oak and Woodland were asked to build a bespoke oak timber frame for a very curvaceous new property. The property is based around a skeletal timber structure which is a unique hybrid. Initially the design resembled the form of an upturned boat. It is built using both green and dried English oak and larch. The owners knew that the project would be challenging especially when using so many exposed curved oak beams and the frame was particularly intricate. When it came to the brickwork the owner who is the MD of Michelmersh Brick Group felt far more comfortable as he was in familiar territory. Clay tiles were sourced to compliment the design as they mellow and improve in appearance in time. The owners feel that not only a mix of traditional materials can be used to create a contemporary, low-energy home, but the traditional materials will improve with age.
