Carpenter Oak and Woodland are featured in the April issue of Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine in an article called “A Natural Extension” involving the aid of the owner’s son Andrew McAvoy of Bl@st Architects. It describes the project as creating a beautifully crafted post and beam oak timber framed extension and converted stone barn for their home. Andrew’s parents couldn’t imagine the whole effect the oak timber extension would give but loved its dovetails, mortise joints and pegs and there were no nails. The surrounding landscape of the garden and the mountains in deepest rural Aberdeenshire had a lot to do with the design of the building. At the Aberdeenshire Council Design Awards Scheme the project walked away with the “Most Innovative New Building and the “Most Sustainable New Building”. The article expresses how the impressive glass and oak timber extension provides not only a striking but cosy addition to the 19th century farm buildings to be enjoyed for a good 300 years to come.
