Carpenter Oak & Woodland are featured in an article entitled “Natural Beauty” in the September 2011 issue. It describes how a challenging project to build an exciting energy-efficient timber frame house on a breathtaking waterside site on the west coast of Scotland was taken on by architects Helen Lucas and partner Malcolm Fraser.
Right from the start of the project a timber frame was the only viable choice for the remote plot. It is elevated on 14 green oak posts bolted to concrete pads, which meant that the ground could remain unlevelled. The post and beam frame was built using a mixture of Douglas fir for the internal parts of the structure and oak for the exposed external timbers. Constructed in Carpenter Oak & Woodland’s framing yard in Angus, the structure was erected over 3 weeks using traditional mortise and tenon joints.
Now christened “Frisealach” (”the frasers’ place”), the finished house has become a dream family home. What they thought was once an overshadowed piece of land has proved to be the most idyllic setting.
