The Sanctuary is probably the oldest building in the village of Steeple Ashton with parts of it dating back to the 14th century. It is a Grade II* listed property, that is it is judged to be of exceptional interest or outstanding importance. Only 4% of UK properties are Grade II* listed so it was essential for the team working on the property to be experts in their respective fields. Architect Adam Cloote of Watson Bertrum Fell talks viewers through the repairs to the building and particularly the conservation and restoration of the timber frame.
Conservation and restoration work at The Sanctuary in Wiltshire
Carpenter Oak & Woodland's conservation division were asked to look at the building at an early stage in the project and give an assessment of the frame. This was followed by a full conservation survey in which each and every repair was identified and a method of repair recommended. The programme gives a good insight into the how the work on the timber frame was conducted and the specific needs of this outstanding period building.
