A shingled roof on a London taxi cabman’s shelter. Looking like overgrown garden sheds, these distinctive buildings can still be found on the streets of London, offering shelter for the drivers of hansom cabs and hackney carriages (taxis) since 1875.

Carpenter Oak & Woodland produces and supplies a range of timber building materials to the timber framing community and to those who are looking to build with authentic period materials.

Carpenter Oak & Woodland first began making hand cleft timber products in order to satisfy the high quality demanded by its conservation work. 

Our range includes frame and tile pegs, lath, batten, weatherboarding and roofing shingles or shakes. We also offer a stock of seasoned bends and has recently introduced new products such as turned columns and spindles.

Our timber products are produced in our Wiltshire timber yard and have been proven in production in a wide variety of structures which have been built or restored by Carpenter Oak & Woodland. (The conservation work undertaken by Carpenter Oak & Woodland includes castles, churches and historic buildings – and many of these projects incorporate our conservation-grade shingles and other timber products.)
