Riven plastering lath and tiling batten

These products are riven by hand, using wedges, mauls and froes, with side axes or riving knives in the traditional manner.

They are made from either English Oak, from which all the sapwood has been removed, leaving only the durable heartwood, or from coppiced sweet chestnut, which will retain small quantities of sapwood (which in chestnut is considered moderately durable).

We also produce lath from Scots Pine, biologically identical to the Baltic Fir lath extensively used from the 18th century onwards. This product is riven in the same manner as the other, but being softwood, the user may elect to have it treated (by others).

For use in conservation work; with lime plaster, or as tile batten, these materials are not only historically appropriate and aesthetically pleasing, but also extremely versatile and durable.

Both products are normally only available in lengths of 3ft (91.5cm); 3’6” (107cm); and 4ft (122cm), but may be available in other sizes to order.

Rosehead nails

We are distributors of cut boat nails, also known as rosehead nails (due to their decorative head).  They are manufactured in Scotland from mild steel to BS1449 and are also available hot dip galvanised to BS729.  We specialise in Flat Point (long taper) variety.  These nails are used in timber boats around the world for their strength and longevity.  We use them primarily for applications in our timber frame building, for these reasons, as well as their decorative effect.  They are also ideal for rustic or “antique” doors.

Please note we are a trade supplier and that there is a minimum order value of £100, exclusive of VAT and delivery.
