Our bespoke approach to building oak timber frames ensures that you always get exactly what you want – whether it’s a very traditional design (using something like a green oak cruck frame) or something highly contemporary, combining timber (usually oak) with modern materials, such as steel and glass.
If you haven’t already selected an architect, we can help. We work with a range of highly respected architects; by listening to your ideas and requirements, we can help you to find the most appropriate architect for your project. We work closely with the architect during the development of ideas and plans – providing expert input into the most efficient and effective use of an oak timber-frame, helping you to get the most from your design and achieve the best value for money.
Oak timber-framed homes can range from the cosy to the majestic
The oak timber frame is constructed in sections (cross frames, wall frames and roof frames), at one of our yards, to meticulous standards – so that, when the team erects it on site, it simply works and fits beautifully. We also like to visit the completed building, around a year after construction, to check how the oak timber frame is performing.
Although all of our work is bespoke and handcrafted, it is competitively priced – and is seldom more expensive than inferior ‘off-the-shelf’ designs which use automated production methods. As it’s handcrafted, your Carpenter Oak & Woodland oak timber frame home will have a unique design and personality - meeting your personal criteria for aesthetics and lifestyle. Of course, an oak timber-framed building is also a lasting investment, benefiting from production methods which have been proven over hundreds of years.
Oak timber frames are an environmentally sound building choice
Many of our clients are rightly interested in the environmental and ecological aspects of a timber-framed building. It’s good to know that oak timber frames take less ‘embodied energy’ (the amount of energy it takes to extract materials, process and fabricate them and then build them into a home) than most other materials. Carpenter Oak & Woodland plants ten trees for every one used – and we acquire timber from sustainable sources only. Most of our timber comes from the UK, from trees which are between forty to fifty years old (oak trees make the majority of their ‘environmental contribution’ during their first twenty years, so there is little environmental advantage from using older timber).
