Channel 4’s Grand Designs, presented by Kevin McCloud, is one of television’s favourite architectural programmes – highlighting as it does some of the most stunning, and challenging, home-building projects.
Carpenter Oak & Woodland has been featured three times on Grand Designs – for three oak timber frame projects that vary from the contemporary to the traditional.
One of the most memorable Grand Designs was this timber frame house in Argyll, Scotland, with stunning views of the Isle of Arran.

The design mixes the most traditional with the most modern – a time-proven green oak cruck timber frame at the heart of a house that also used concrete, steel and zinc extensively. It sounds like it shouldn’t work, but this oak framed house carries off the contrast between old and new magnificently.

This oak framed house was referred to by Grand Designs’ Kevin McCloud as the ‘cruciform house’ – as the oak frame was set out in the form of a cross.

This oak frame home mixes modern exterior styling with a more traditional interior, where the beams of the green oak frame become one of the main features of the house. The shape of this unique oak framed house gives it splendid views in every direction. Kevin McCloud said that the oak frame house “reaches out into the landscape and the world outside, grabs it and brings it indoors”.
