Project background

Originally, this building had been designed to include a steel frame, but we were approached to see if it could be built in timber within budget, and happily it could. Suprising to the QS, but not to us!
The design included transverse cross frames with unsupported spans in excess of 18 metres, so we suggested the use of a jib and cotter system which not only gave the required engineering support and bracing and dealt with any issues of shrinkage, but also provided an aesthetic that delivered for the architect. This system is explained further in our case study on this project.
The timber chosen for this frame is green Douglas fir, suitable for larger sections due to its straightness of grain over long lengths.
